Hello/Intro In ShapeReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. Studies show that people with severe mental illness tend to have a higher risk of early mortality from suicide and ill health. The community mental health center in Keene is working to combat the problem through the "In Shape" program. Mon-AD-nock Family Services is grabbing national attention as the only center in the country to address the overall health of people diagnosed with mental health issues. Outlook's Phil Vaughn traveled to Keene and spoke to a single mother struggling with mental illness who is trying to turn her life around with the help of "In Shape." |

Now, a conversation with an author whose book provides a window into the thousands of families who live with or care for people with developmental disabilities. From the beginning, author Rachel Simon's book "Riding the Bus with my Sister" generated a lot of interest. Simon spent a year riding city buses in Pennsylvania with Beth, her mentally retarded sister. The book chronicles that journey. I caught up with Simon in Concord in 2003 where she talked about her "true life journey" -- the lessons she learned along the way - and the book that captures it all. |

The book has since been made into a "Hallmark Hall of Fame" movie --which aired in 2005. The rights to Simon's book were optioned by Rosie O'Donell who played Beth in the production. It was directed by Academy Award winner Anjelica Huston. |
